Reflective Journal

After this past 12 weeks, I realize that there are so many things that I have learnt in studying Introduction to Management. First of all, I would like to thanks to my lecturer and my tutor for teaching me this subject. Honestly this is one of my favourite subjects for this semester as I can say that it is easy for me to understand about this module.
In the first week of lecture, I have gained a lot of knowledge and management skills. Basically it is about managers. For example, who are managers and where they work. I also knew why organizations need managers and why managers play important role in an organization. After studying this chapter yes I would agree that managers are really important in an organisation as it helps to coordinate and supervise the work of other employees so that the goal of an organization can be accomplished.
In lecture two, I have learnt about management history module. The history of management includes four approaches which are the classic approach, quantitative approach, behaviour approach and also contemporary approach. In order to improve production efficiency in an organization, a manager should have these four major approaches. I also learnt about the theory of scientific management by Taylor and also the general administrative theory by Henri Fayol and Max Weber. Besides, managers also use behaviour approach to design jobs to motivate employees and also quantitative approach to improve decision making in an organization.
Moreover, I have also learnt about what constraints and challenges they are facing in external environment. We also need to know who the stakeholders are and how to manage relationship with them. I have also learnt that the business environment such as organizational culture and organizational environment which play an important role for the way an organization is managed. It will influence manager’s decision making. Organizational environment such as economic downturns result in unemployment which affects the production of the organization.
In order to make an organization successful, constructing an organizational structure plays a very important role. Managers need to establish a structural design that will best support and allow employees to perform and do their work effectively and efficiently. In addition, there are six step of strategic management that I have learnt which are identifying the organization’s current mission, goals, and strategies, SWOT analysis, Formulating strategies, Implementing strategies, and Evaluating results.

Last but not least, managers with leadership skills will be able to influence others to achieve organization’s goals. There are three types of theories namely traits theories, behavioural theories, and contingency theories. By studying “introduction to Management”, I now know the reality of work and challenges that faced by managers. I also learnt about the importance of motivating employees in the workforce and having team leading skills will lead employees to perform and do their work effectively and efficiently. Overall, I can say that I have understood well this subject and hope this will help me in doing my revision for my final exam.
